Notes: (2) -- Bantry House: A Richard White came to this region in the 17th C and settled on Whiddy Island in the bay. Subsequently, he acquired from the Earl of Angley, the lands that form the present demesne on the mainland across from Whiddy. His son, also Richard, studied law and was admitted to the English Bar. He prospered, and in 1765 near the end of his life, he moved from Whiddy Island to Bantry House, which was then called Blackrock. This house, a spacious square building had been built abt. 1750, by the Hutchinson Family. Richard Whites' son, Simon, was married in 1766 to Frances Jane Hedges-Eyre, dau. of Richard Hedges-Eyre of Mt. Hedges & Macroom Castle. Their 1st son was born in 1767 and named Richard. By the end of the 18th C, this Richard had acquired most of the land around Bantry and along the Berehaven Penisula. Richard Whites' home, then called Seafield. He became Baron Bantry in 1796, Viscount in 1800, and Earl of Bantry in 1816.

Notes: (3) -- Fota Island: The demesne of Fota covers practically the entire extent of an island situated in the Lee estuary, between Cork & Cobh. The ruined castle on Fota Island is an old Barry Stronghold. The Barony was conferred on the Barrys as early as the 16th C. They took the title of Buttevant. The 6th Lord Buttevant married a dau. of Richard Boyle, the great Earl of Cork, and he was created Earl of Barrymore in 1627. The 4th Earl purchase Marbury (a property in Cheshire, in the year 1714 and gave it & Fota Island to his younger son. This branch of the Barry's lived principally in Marbury from then on. In the 19th Century, John Smith-Barry added to the house (the Architects were the Morrison, father & son.)

Notes: (4) -- Kilshannig: Designed by Davis Ducart & built in 1765. Devonsher had no children, so he left Kilshannig to his Grand-nephew John Newenham who added Devonshire to his own name. John died in 1801.
