Notes: (2) -- Beaulieu -- Having been established by the Plunkett family some time after the Norman invasion, and remaining their home until approx. 1650. The estate was declared forfeit in 1642, by an act of the Long Parliament, in retaliation for Wm. Plunkett's participation in the rebellion of 1641., but the family must have remained in residence as Plunkett died there in 1644. There is a family tradition that Sir Henry Tichborne, who led the troops that captured Beaulieu in that war, obtained the property by payment from the Plunkett, but the deed of transfer has recently been destoyed. Sir Henry Tichborne was living at Beaulieu at least as early as 1650. He petitioned Cromwell in 1654 for a grant of the estate in settlement of debts he had incurred on the government's behalf, but his application was only partially successful, and he remained a tenant there for the duration of the Commonwealth. When Charles II was restored to power, Sir Henry Tichborne became Marshal of the Irish Army. Wm. Tichborne, son of Sir Henry, was confirmed in occupation of Beaulieu by the Act of Settlement of 1662. (He built the present house). Beaulieu is situated on the banks of the River Boyne, a few miles downstream for Drogheda. Sir Wm. Tichborne, son of the builder of the house, had been created Baron Ferrard of Beaulieu in 1714. (died in 1731). The present owner is Mrs. Nesbit Waddington, the 9th generation descendant of Sir Henry Tichborne who purchased Beaulieu from the Plunkett family.
