Notes: (2) -- Abbeyleix -- Takes it name from an old abbey 'de lege dei', which was founded by Conogher O'More in 1183 (there are 2 tombstones of the O'Mores still preserved there dating 1486). At the time of the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the abbey lands of 820 acs. were granted to Thos. Butler, Earl of Ormonde in 1562. Abbely Leix remained Butler property until 1698, when Thos. DeVesey obtained an assignment of the grant and established the present demesne... The present owner, the 6th Viscount, has recently opended the gardens to the public.
